Diwali is the festival of lights in India. Specifically, every year, the Diwali festival is celebrated in the month of October. Also, it is the most important of the country since it marks the new year in the Hindu calendar. Besides other details, the festivities last for 5 days. According to legend, this date corresponds to the return of King Rama (he also considered a god in the Hindu religion) on the Ayodhya kingdom after 14 years of exile. During this one, he would have slaughtered the Ravana demon. It is said that the inhabitants of Ayodhya have illuminated the city with small oil lamps to celebrate the return of their king.

About the festival

Also, we call Diwali the festival of lights as, it symbolises the victory of good over evil. Moreover, even today, the Indians decorate their houses with small oil lamps and “Rangoli” (folk art) for the occasion.

We celebrate the Dhanteras during the first five days. Then we celebrate Diwali, followed by the New Year and Bhai Dooj. According to Hindu mythology, the goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) visits the privileged at home. We buy new clothes and clean up to welcome the goddess. This is a time when gifts are also offered. Diwali, in India, is also a period where we play a lot of cards (games are often transformed into gambling) and where we drink.

Regions to visit during Diwali in India

Diwali, the Festival of Lights in India, beside in Kerala (where we prefer Onam), is celebrated everywhere in India. And, if you want to visit India at the time of this holiday, consider the following options:

  • Make yourself homestay in northern India. Diwali is particularly exceptional in Varanasi and Jaipur as well as in the Golden Temple of Amritsar.
  • Goa celebrates differently by organizing evenings and traditional shows.
Warning:
  • There are oil lamps everywhere. Be careful to fire your clothes.
  • Use earplugs if the sound of firecrackers annoys you.
  • The large amount of smoke can cause difficult breathing.

Happy Diwali
